Day 21) Virginia City to West Fork Campground

The day started with a big climb away from Virginia City. We’d already done a mile of it yesterday to get to the campground and it really wasn’t too bad. It was fun descending into the beautful valley on the otherside – we got above 35mph. In Ennis we stopped at the garage for lunch, deciding it’d be quicker and cheaper than a cafe. The main street of Ennis looked pleasant though, shame we couldn’t get here for 4th July. We stopped at Cameron for a cool drink – it looked like a town of the map, but as has often been the case, it was just a store.

About 12 miles before the campground a strong headwind suddenly hit us. It was really tough trying to battle against it and we rode alongside the river watching the poor fishermen bobbing about on the rough river in their boats. Relief hit us when we arrived at West Fork Campground, even if there were warnings of Grizzly bear sightings posted around. The couple looking after the site were so warm and friendly. They said that they had passed us a few times in the car, as they had been running errands, and had contemplated asking us if we wanted a ride! Apparently the winds were even worse yesterday and it had taken a couple of guys from 11am until 7pm to get here from Ennis (probably about 30 miles)!

We pitched our tent in the middle of a big field and spread ourselves out in the sun as we cooked our dinner. No bears in sight.
